Department of Paediatric

Islamabad Medical and Dental College is attached to three teaching hospitals, Social Security Hospital, Ahmed Medical Complex and Saint Joseph Hospice; each has a department of Paediatrics.

The Department consists of indoor, outdoor and emergency services. Indoor department consists of General Paediatrics Ward and Nursery. General Paediatrics Ward consists of 30 Beds and is fully equipped to cater all Paediatric cases. Nursery has two infant warmers, two incubators, eight cots and one phototherapy machine.

On average, there are 250 admissions in Paediatrics ward and 50 admissions in nursery per month. Outdoor department has monthly turnover of 700 patients.

Paediatrics department of Saint Joseph Hospice has 15 handicapped children with residential facility.

Students of 3rd, 4th and final year MBBS are trained in Paediatrics regarding history taking, physical examination and treatment of patients through lectures, ward classes and clinico-pathological conferences. Special workshops on Neonatal Resuscitation with hands on practice on Manikins are carried out for students. They actively participate in patient management and minor clinical procedures. Students present cases to Head of Department on Grand Rounds and present interesting cases in Clinico-pathological Conferences. They also attend meetings of Pakistan Paediatric Association. At the end of their training period, they are evaluated through OSCE, long and short cases.
